Tips & Tricks #24 – The Impact of Air Humidity on Electronics Manufacturing Quality

Air humidity plays a crucial role in electronics manufacturing processes, especially during assembly and soldering. Both excessively low and high humidity levels can lead to serious quality issues.

At low humidity, the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) increases, which can damage sensitive electronic components and integrated circuits. On the other hand, high humidity causes moisture absorption in PCBs and SMD components, which during soldering may result in the “popcorn effect”, microcracks, and weak solder joints. It can also accelerate corrosion and reduce product reliability and lifetime.

That is why maintaining stable environmental conditions is essential in electronics production, typically within 21–24°C and 40–60% RH, along with continuous monitoring in both production and warehouse areas.
